This photo appeared in my message center, and I thought: wow. That's what I call a portrait. It's classic yet refreshing. The black and white is really a great choice in this photo.

Of course the light in this portrait is superb, the little light spots falling through his hat - but also the streak of light brushing this man's cheeck. The contrast makes this effect even more visible, but it's not too harsh. The depth of field is incredible as well. It all fitst perfectly.

The next thing that caught my eye was the way it was cropped (or maybe shot this way). I really like the crop, because it's not ordinary for this kind of portrait but it doesn't appear 'off' in any way. Together with the man's mysterious look in his eyes it makes it a very interesting photograph you could look at for hours.

I love the contrast and the light on his face. I've always admired photos of older people - they can be beautifully caught by lights and shadows.
